Baseball on skates: hell in the outfield?

Below is a picture from Brooklyn’s Washington Park in 1884. The men on skates really are doing what it looks like: playing baseball. Based on a description herein of a 50-30 victory of the Atlantic Club over the Gotham Club, I think we can infer that the ice gave the team at bat an advantage. Not hard to see why: Fielding on ice-skates couldn’t have been easy.

“Iceball”? There seems to be a fundamental incongruity here.
